Common questions

Answers about custom automation, how we work, and what to expect when you partner with us.

What is custom business automation software?
Custom business automation software is purpose-built code that automates the specific manual workflows your company runs (approvals, data entry, reporting, handoffs between tools) rather than a generic off-the-shelf product. Because it is built around your exact processes, it eliminates the workarounds and manual steps that generic tools always leave behind.
How is working with MHSS different from hiring a software agency?
Most agencies staff junior developers managed by account managers who are not engineers. We embed experienced senior engineers directly with your operators and leadership. There is no account layer, no bloated team, and no knowledge that lives only in a vendor's head. When we step back, your team owns the software.
When should a company hire a custom software consultant instead of using off-the-shelf tools?
Off-the-shelf tools (CRMs, ERPs, project management apps) cover common workflows. A custom consultant makes sense when your process is specific enough that every tool you try requires workarounds, when you're spending significant staff time on manual steps that a tool 'almost' handles, or when you need systems to talk to each other in ways their APIs don't natively support.
How long does a typical engagement take?
Most automation and internal tool projects run four to twelve weeks from scoping to a working system in production. Larger integrations or dashboard builds with complex data pipelines can run longer. We scope precisely before committing to a timeline so there are no surprises.
Do you work with companies outside San Diego?
Yes. We are remote-friendly across the U.S. For San Diego County clients we are happy to meet on-site. Most of our working sessions happen over video regardless of location. What matters is clear communication, not geography.
What happens after the project is delivered?
We hand off with documentation, runbooks, and a knowledge-transfer session so your team can operate and extend the software without depending on us. If you want ongoing support or have follow-on work, we can structure a retainer, but there is no lock-in.
